Asking for help is a good thing. Are you shaking your head “no?” It’s time to evolve past the idea that we must do it all ourselves. Asking for support can be the key to success and here’s why.
Learn from those that have come before
Establishing a network of mentors and experts can save you time, money and mistakes in the long run. By having the courage to reach out and ask for the advice, expertise, and recommendations from those who have succeeded before means you are ahead of the game. Richard Branson himself, best known for his founding role of the Virgin Group, admits the importance of asking for help and talks of how “sometimes you will run into a specific problem that only others who have been in your position will understand.” Don’t reinvent the wheel. Look at how others have learned from a similar position or experience and use it to your advantage.
Reframe your thinking
Do you see asking for help as a sign of weakness or defeat? What if we reframed our thinking to see asking for help as a sign of strength? It can be hard to admit we need guidance or that we have no idea what we are doing. Taking a step back and admitting we need input from others takes courage. Does anyone really want to confess they can’t do it all? Reaching out, however, can connect you, anchor you, and build a support network of like-minded individuals. Definitely a win-win.
Increased productivity
Think of all you need to get done on your to-do list this week or even just today. Now imagine taking even one item off that list. What would you be able to accomplish with the extra time and energy on your hands? Asking for help can increase your productivity when you delegate items on your to do list to those willing to lend a helping hand.
Better flow
Remember the old saying “two heads are better than one?” That’s because it’s true! Working with a support team increases focus, creativity, energy and flow. You have others to bounce ideas around with. You have the opportunity to showcase your own talents. You have the opportunity to showcase the talents of those on your support team. Only good things can come from that! Reaching out for help isn’t easy. It’s hard to admit defeat and imperfection. It’s hard to share with the world we can’t do it all. Asking for support is worth it in the end game. A mentor network, connecting with like-minded individuals, increased productivity, better flow, and new opportunities for creativity make reaching out a must do.
