Nearly everything you see in the world today has some aspect of design to it. Someone sat there and thought up creative ways that they could make their products stand out amongst the hundreds of other products out there.
A company’s main focus is always getting the product or service that they want out as quickly and efficiently and ensuring that the design of the product is to the customer’s liking.
Design and product development have gone hand in hand for decades and it is something that isn’t noticed often but is ever present. Take Apple for example, the company focuses on nearly every aspect of its devices, because customers tend to notice the little details long after the allure of the main features pass.
Apple even pays attention to the interior design of its computers, to establish the type of quality that they strive for. When something is well designed inside and out, ensuring that it is functions well. Not only does the company get the satisfaction of delivering an incredible product, but also, customers appreciate the careful planning and hard work to ensure they get high quality results.
Here’s a clip outlining Apple’s design values.
Ultimately, a good design will entice customers to purchase your product or service to meet their needs. Though it may seem like a very daunting task to accomplish in your own company, it isn’t impossible. Being inspired to create great designs comes from a deeper drive to improve quality of life. Steve Jobs said that design is not really about how things look, but it’s about how they work.
Great design is important not only for products, but for systems and business operation. A well designed organization will function smoothly. Tim Brown says the design profession is preoccupied with creating beautiful and fashionable objects. In this TED talk, he encourages “design thinking”, to answer bigger questions of progress and reinvention of fundamental social issues such as clean water access.
