What Percentage of Brands Have Mobile Websites?

If you’re a brand or business (large or small) looking to promote yourself online, you should constantly be asking yourself, “What is the most effective way for me to reach my current and potential customers?” The answer is meeting them on the platforms (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, Yelp) and devices (PCs, laptops, tablets) where they spent most of their time.

We live in the era of mobile, so reaching people on their phones and tablets is going to be hugely important to you and your online marketing plan. Ninety-one percent of U.S. adults own a mobile phone, and 61 percent of these phones are smartphones. Better yet, people who use tablets tend to spend more money online than those who simply use PCs to surf—50 percent more, in fact.

So what percentage of brands have mobile websites? Numbers vary depending on the source, but the short answer is a lot of them—but at the same time, if it’s not all of them, it’s not enough. A mobile website will ensure your site looks good and is easy to use for consumers who are on the go, but so many times other business initiatives come before building a responsive, mobile-friendly website, which is understandable but unfortunate.

Fashion brands in particular are keeping mobile in mind when building digital experiences for their customers. A September 2014 study notes that 83 percent of Women’s Wear Daily’s top fashion brands have mobile-optimized website. The study names The North Face, Tiffany & Co., Pink, and Victoria’s Secret as fashion brands who take advantage of all mobile has to offer, while Candie’s, Casio, and Joe Boxer are brands who are doing little to nothing on mobile.

The bottom line is consumers want web experiences that are beautiful and work well with their preferred device. Seventy-two percent of consumers “expect” brands to have a mobile-friendly site, even though many of them (96 percent) had visited a site that wasn’t optimized for their phone or tablet.

You may be wondering if an app is the answer to your mobile-related questions. And the answer is….sort of. An app is just another way for your to connect with your on-the-go consumer, and you can never have too many of those. But apps require development dollars and additional upkeep on top of the time and money you’re spending on your website. And an app should only be used if you’re creating an experience that is best suited to an app.
