Top 5 iOS 9 Features for Freelancers

Though the Gig Economy is based around the power of your individual brand, you’ve undoubtedly noticed that one brand makes this brave new world run: Apple.

Coffee shops, the office of the modern day independent entrepreneur, are like ads for Apple: Macbooks, iPhones and iPads are ubiquitous. That’s because Apple has succeeded in streamlining the software upon which independent entrepreneurs and small business owners rely.

Staying up to date on the latest software upgrades and enhanced features of their iOS is key to increasing your efficiency and expanding your mobility. These are the top five new features in iOS 9 that will help provide you with greater autonomy to work from anywhere.

1) Low Power mode

If you’re constantly on the go and don’t have time to sit at home and let your devices charge, or you, quite understandably, are annoyed at having to carry additional portable chargers and cords, iOS 9’s new low-power mode helps ensure that you maximize the use of your device. The setting dims the screen and limits some functionality, but it can add an additional three hours of active use.

2) New Siri

Siri has been a work in progress since it was introduced in iOS 5, but it’s become an increasingly useful feature of the iOS platform, which makes the cumbersome task of adding reminders or appointments to your calendar much easier. The latest update adds myriad new functionality, but perhaps most useful for freelancers is the ability to set reminders from text in an email or a message and to also set location-based reminders.

3) Proactive Assistant

Working with Siri, the new iOS has a function called Proactive Assistant that learns your habits and analyzes your data to create helpful shortcuts to apps and functions. For example, when creating an event invite or email, Proactive will come up with contact suggestions that you usually include based on the subject lines and event names.

4) Swipe Over and Multi-tasking

On the iPad, Swipe Over allows you to access different apps without leaving the one you’re currently using, allowing you to switch more seamlessly between them. Additionally, you can go into a split-view mode and utilize two apps at once, which has been one of the major complaints about the iPad since its introduction.

5) Picture-in-Picture

On a related note, for the iPad Mini 3 and iPad Air 2 there’s a mode that allows you to continue watching videos even after you’ve left the app. The video appears as a small box that you can continue to play or pause while using other apps. It’s an especially useful feature for individuals doing video transcription or translation work.

These are just a few of the new features and changes in iOS 9 that make your devices that much more useful to your on-the-go work life.
