The Freelancer’s Declaration of Independence

You can’t spell freelancer without the word free.

With July 4th coming up, the Declaration of Independence serves as a reminder of the power that we hold in creating the lives that we want for ourselves. Many times, we don’t see the consequences of this document in our own lives, but the only way to really understand something, is to relate to it. We have the ability to create profound statements and manifestos just as America’s founders did back in 1776.

Freelancers have a different way of living and working. They are on the frontier of innovation and change, and therefore, they should also have their own ¬Declaration of Independence. Even if July 4th isn’t your country’s holiday, we invite you to read this manifesto and reflect on the freedoms that freelancers have created for themselves.

The Freelancer’s Declaration of Independence

When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary to move beyond the 9-5 workday and find new ways to earn money. Men and women can pave their own road and work towards independence by freelancing.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men and women can be creative and diligent. That we can earn a living, in a way that fulfills our needs for Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. A life of our own choice, a liberty to earn extra income on the side, and the ability to pursue what makes us happy.

As freelancers, we have earned independence in the following ways:

1. We can capitalize on and market our natural talents and passions.
2. We have the opportunity to choose our own clients and let go of those who mistreat us.
3. We are able to earn a wage on the platforms of our choice according to the products and services we provide.
4. We have the ability to work from almost anywhere, including our homes, coffee shops, shared workspaces, and even on the road.
5. We can set our own dress code for the day, every day (probably pajamas).
6. We have the freedom to set our own hours for when we know we are most productive.
7. We no longer have to answer to anyone but ourselves and our clients.
8. We are able to pursue what makes us happy, not what we’re told should make us happy.
