Super Seller Nickih: “When I lost my job, Fiverr was a lifesaver!”

Nicki, known on Fiverr as Nickih, is a fulltime archaeologist, and although she loves doing it, the profession is not as glamorous or as profitable as portrayed in the Indiana Jones movies.

But for Nicki, selling her editing/proofreading Gig® isn’t just about supplementing her income, it’s also become a way to meet great people. Here she is to tell us her story.

Nicki’s Fiverr Journey

In early 2013, I lost my job as an archaeologist and was in a pretty tight financial situation. I was brainstorming creative ways to pay my bills, and my boyfriend told me about Fiverr®. After looking over the site and learning about how the Gig economy works and the types of services offered, I thought, “I might as well give this a whirl. Who knows? I may make enough to cover a few bills until I can find a new position.”

One thing that attracted me to Fiverr was that it gave me freedom to determine what my services would be and set my own deadlines, which was essential during my job hunt and still is today as I am again working fulltime and maintain my Fiverr business on the side.

Deciding what Gigs to offer

I knew I should play to my strengths. Editing and proofreading come easily to me. I’m a good writer and do a ton of writing and editing in my professional life, so I figured that I could benefit others as an editor/proofreader on Fiverr—and I have! My buyers and the types of content I edit and proofread range from professional bios and resumes to children’s books and sci-fi adventures. I’ve even had a few buyers who’ve wanted their love letters and complaint letters proofread before sending them off!

I never imagined that my “side business” would grow like it has, and my Fiverr income is currently a great supplement to my regular salary. When I lost my job, Fiverr was a lifesaver! Thankfully, I’m no longer in that bind, but my Fiverr income is still immensely helpful, especially with my student loan payments. It also allows me to afford things that I would struggle paying for otherwise.

For example, I bought a new car last year, and last month I splurged on the greatest Marc Jacobs handbag you’ve ever seen without worrying about breaking the bank!

Advice for Newcomers

I think that the biggest impact on the growth of my business has been putting the focus on my clients’ happiness and doing all I can to build a positive reputation as an honest, hardworking and friendly seller. A positive and friendly attitude that conveys how much you like your work and appreciate your clients leaves a lasting impression and can turn a one-time buyer into a loyal client or even friend. Plus, keeping a positive attitude and mindset will make a big difference in whether you enjoy or hate your work.

Overall, keeping a positive, fun, and professional attitude towards everyone you come in contact with will really help you to establish a business where your existing clients love working with you and you attract new clients because of your great service and attitude.

The Impact of Fiverr

A few years ago, I had never heard of Fiverr, and now, it’s a daily part of my life and helps to pay my bills. It’s also changed the way I think of my career. Now, I’m an archaeologist and a professional editor. Fiverr is even on my resume! I also buy on Fiverr. For example, I always use Cyuena for editing my photos before I have them printed or framed. I also participate in the forum and really love it.

It’s a great place to go for information, ask for advice, and meet other sellers and buyers. It’s been a fantastic resource for support and friendship. Hands down, the best thing about my Fiverr business is all the great people I’ve met and the opportunity for making awesome friends and connecting with great people all over the world.
