How New Categories Are Born on Fiverr

Recently we introduced some changes to the structure of Graphics & Design category. It was a long and interesting process and we wanted to share a bit of the backstage work we did. It was a true cross-team effort involving Fiverr’s product team, editorial team, the business intelligence team, the field experts- Fiverr’s design studio, the marketing team and more.

So when do you know you need new categories?

The Fiverr catalog is a lot like a catalog of a big department store, and as such there are a lot of different approaches to categorize the products. For example, mens clothing and women’s clothing, as opposed to casual wear and formal wear. But once the products are categorized it should be very clear where you can find sandals, and that’s exactly what we set out to do for the Graphics and Design category.

Where is the first place we look for a misplaced service?

You guessed it! In each Fiverr category we have the ‘Other’ sub category which is the home of the gigs that are ‘doing their own thing’. When we saw a significant number of gigs that offer a similar service, in our case T-shirt design, we knew that we have a service in need of its own home.

How do we know it’s time for two services to go their separate ways?

You may have noticed the two new subcategories ‘Banner Ads’ and ‘Social Media Design’ which have a common ancestor ‘Banners & Headers’. The spheres of online ads and social media marketing evolved so much, new design elements were added to the social media channels and our sellers were quick to respond with matching gigs. It became very clear that the “two brothers” were too grown up to share a room and a change was required.

Sometimes a great highly demanded service can hide in plain sight

As we reviewed the services offered in each of our Graphics & Design subcategories we found a very popular service that was somewhat relevant to one subcategory and somewhat relevant to another, but wasn’t the best fit for either, and that’s how the new ‘Vector Tracing’ subcategory was born.

Who benefits from all these changes?

Well, everyone. This was a cross-team effort but it also has cross-team benefits. Categories that are more targeted to the services offered on Fiverr, allow for better SEO, better buyer acquisition, better user experience, better editorial work, better insights to the inner workings of our business, and finally better for Fiverr sellers, the drivers of Fiverr’s marketplace, all these changes are inspired by you.
