Antonio, Awebbster_1982 on Fiverr, overcame a grim childhood to become an orthopedic resident surgeon, an Iraq War veteran, an author, and an increasingly popular speaker and mentor. Now Antonio is using Fiverr to help pre-med students get into medical school.
Some background
Ever since I was a child, I had to find it in myself to overcome what promised to be a very desolate future. Growing up in the heart of Shreveport, Louisiana, I was constantly surrounded by influences of the very worst sort, including gangs, violence and drugs. My family was split between those in prison and those who were not, and several of my close friends were killed. Others began serving long prison sentences for crimes they committed as teenagers.
I wrote a novel, Overcoming the Odds, based on my experiences. It portrays the heartache and desperate challenges it took to rise above my austere beginnings. More important, it echoes my personal belief that there is an incredible, undeniable strength in every person to overcome the odds.
For example, before I was accepted into medical school, I had applied three times and got rejection after rejection. Based on my experience overcoming this, I now serve as a mentor for underprivileged middle and high school students interested in a career in medicine.
Finding Fiverr
I first heard about Fiverr through a friend who recommended the site while I was writing my first book. I immediately fell in love. I never knew there was a place where I could come and receive so many services in one centralized place.
I created a Gig® to help pre-med students get into medical school by reviewing their applications, helping with and reviewing their essays and providing general advice.
I made my first sale just a few days later. Through Fiverr I have mentored several pre-med students, and my business has definitely grown since first starting. I promote it mainly by word of mouth and occasionally through my social channels.
I have also purchased more than 50 Gigs from Fiverr sellers, including designing a book cover, editing, and some promotional Gigs. My favorite is the video editing Gig I use prior to uploading Gig videos to my website.
Fiverr has simplified my life. Whenever I need anything to run my speaking and mentoring business, I know I can rely on Fiverr to assist me. As a surgeon, my time is very valuable and limited. Having a site like Fiverr has definitely saved me many times when I needed to accomplish certain tasks last minute. I absolutely love the site!
