For many people, when they think of entrepreneurship, they imagine tech-savvy types programming the day away or high-powered marketing executives taking their talents solo – but entrepreneurship isn’t some ivory tower or unachievable state of being. The beauty of entrepreneurship is that it’s open to everyone! Whether your talent is something you do with your hands, a way of exercising your creativity, or simply a skill that you can provide for others, entrepreneurship is open to you! This week’s Gig Economy News is all about how the even the least tech savvy of us can take the leap into turning a passion into a source of income.
The Write Way
Many people don’t think about writing as a skill, let alone a business, but the truth is it’s one of the most flexible, marketable, and monetized skills out there. We all know how to write, but writing in the right way for the right client takes a lot of time and care. For some, that means turning their writing skills into a copywriting business, for others it may mean fusing their creativity and their writing in order to reach an audience that’s itching for a good story, or, like one Fiverr community member did, you can use writing to share your knowledge or even your philosophy about life in order to help others. However you use your writing skills, don’t dismiss them just because they may not lead to a tangible product.
Think Outside the 9-5 Box
A lot of people have an idea for a business, but they get stuck in the implementation stage. One of the biggest stumbling blocks to becoming an entrepreneur is changing your mindset and leaving the 9-5 box. Entrepreneurship isn’t something you clock in and out of- it’s a complete lifestyle and it requires flexibility and dedication. Take advice from someone who has been there and learn to break free from the constraints of the traditional workday in order to pursue your goals and dreams.
Don’t Ignore the Internet
If you’re someone who makes a physical product, it’s easy to neglect the digital world. However many businesses, from fashion to furniture, thrive precisely because they’ve invested in their online presence. After all, if people don’t see you, how will they know you’re there? With the whole world online, there’s no reason that your business shouldn’t be too. Check out how makers can make the most out of the internet to sell and grow.
Avoid the Avoidable
There’s no end to what we can learn from those who have tried and failed. After all, failure is a natural part of the entrepreneurship experience. Whether it’s on a small scale or a large scale, you need to embrace the possibility of failure in order to launch. However, that’s no reason to make totally avoidable mistakes. Take a page out of one entrepreneur’s book and make sure you don’t make these mistakes that led to his startup’s downfall.
