We all love watching movies. Whether it is on our couch or at the theater, film holds a special place in our worlds. Movies can excite, anger and inspire. Some movies can even teach you valuable lessons about running a business. Here are four movies from the last four years that entrepreneurs can look to.
The Social Network (2010)
The most important takeaway from The Social Network for business owners is the supreme power of an idea. As the now more than a billion users can attest to, Zuckerberg and fellow Facebook creators tapped into a powerful idea. They also built it amongst fierce competition and sloppy legal battles into the billion-dollar company it is today. Ride the idea as quickly and for as long as you can. Temper expectations – as you can never fully see all the possible problems around the corner—and your idea will guide you to ultimate success.
Moneyball (2011)
Billy Beane, Oakland Athletics general manager was faced with a problem that many small businesses face – how do you compete with bigger, wealthier companies that can hire the most talented people and throw money at problems to solve them? Beane, played by Brad Pitt, is forced to think outside of the box and come up with new analytics and measurements of skill and productivity. The lesson here is that you cannot win by competing against a larger company in their own world, using their metrics and their strategies. Ingenuity is often more important than experience. As Beane successfully did (and is doing), he approached the same problems as his competitors, but with freshness in his method. Surely a useful lesson all entrepreneurs should learn.
The Avengers (2012)
What can a movie about superheroes fighting space monsters teach you about running a business? Well, for starters- the importance of collaborating and effective leadership. All the heroes are uniquely powerful and capable on their own, but together, their skills are heightened. This is an important lesson for pooling resources in your business. It is easy to disregard the help of others and try to do things your own way, but that would have lead our world to have been destroyed in The Avengers and it could implode your business too. Relying on others is not a weakness, but a strength, especially when the friendly aid serves to enhance your strengths.
The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
A cautionary tale of the excesses that can accompany success, The Wolf of Wall Street teaches a valuable lesson on extravagance and greed. It is important for any entrepreneur to define what success means to them. Follow your goals, but not at the expense of all those around you. Another take away from this film is the importance of confidence in anything that you do. Jordan Belfort (Leonardo Dicaprio) can be accused of many things, but being unconfident is not one of them. Know that you will be successful, take steps in that direction and figure out the rest as you go.
