We started EmergenSee in late 2012 and now have just under 20 employees located in California, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C. Our free version launched in 2013, and our Professional Monitoring Center and Enterprise versions were released in June of 2014.
Because we are a startup, our Product Development department consumes most of our budget, while the Marketing Department needs very diverse skillsets on a part-time basis. Going to outside marketing and PR firms is very costly, so a friend suggested I look at Fiverr as a potential resource for some of our projects.
Joining Fiverr
It took a little time to get used to how Fiverr’s Gig® system works, like finding the best talent and using the rating system, but once I got comfortable, it was very easy to fill in the gaps between what we could do in-house (or had time to do) and what skills we needed assistance with. I started with a few small projects, such as screen captures and short blog posts. When those were successful, I started to look at other areas that required more skilled talent.
We were using a PR firm out of New York that cost approximately $10,000 a month but delivered very few results. I did my research on Fiverr and found a very talented and experienced PR professional who goes by the username Anarchofighter. He has been amazing with PR advice and writing. The first press release we ordered was written and distributed within 24 hours of ordering it—at a time when we were swamped with other projects. I’ve ordered from him a few times now, and I always get very valuable insights with actionable plans and results. All this for a fraction of the cost of that New York firm!
We’ve also used a few analytics and online marketing Gigs including: Website feedback, App Store Optimization, Search Engine Optimization, and keywords.
I’m currently finalizing a couple of App Store videos with the help of CMeeks, who is an awesome talent and has been a pleasure to work with—and someone I never would have had the pleasure of finding if not for Fiverr. Quality work, affordably priced, easy to work with and very professional.
Tips for buying Gigs
One of my best experiences on Fiverr has been getting in touch with sellers prior to ordering a Gig to see if the Gig is a good fit. I’ve found that Gigs vary from person to person, so it’s always best to ask first rather than order and then need to cancel because there is a misunderstanding about what you were going to receive. Everyone I have reached out to was forthcoming and honest as to what I could expect, and if it was not a good fit, they would suggest something else that was more in line with our needs. I’ve also decided not to use someone for a particular project, but then later, when I had a more appropriate project, I ordered from that same seller because they had been honest about the first Gig. Another great feature of Fiverr is the custom quote, which gives me and the seller the flexibility to work together outside the scope of a set Gig!
As a startup company, we need to be lean and agile, and one of the ways we do this is by relying on outsourcing and virtual teams. Fiverr is an ideal testing ground to find talent that we can stick with—and that we might not have access to if we used only local talent or full-time employees. In this way, Fiverr is an important contributor to EmergenSee and is helping us continue to pursue our vision.
