Apple’s New Multitasking Functions Are a Dream for Freelancers

The life of a freelancer is a life on the go. That means many freelancers rely heavily on phones and tablets to receive and send information and content.

Developers are aware that the things they’re making are being used by busy people who are often not near a laptop computer, so it makes perfect sense that Apple’s new mobile operating system, iOS 9, has some spiffy new multitasking features that freelancers will love.

iPhone Multitasking Gets Better

Double clicking the home button on your iPhone has put you in multitasking mode for some time now, but you’ll notice now that those other windows no longer exist in a scrolling row at the bottom of your screen. They now fan out to the left like a deck of cards, starting with the most recent app. The previously opened windows are larger than they were in the previous iteration, making them easier to read and easier to scroll through.

You’ll also notice that if you click a link in on app that opens another, the upper left corner of your screen will offer a shortcut to take you back to the most recent app, sparing you from having to double click the home button. It might sound like a minor update, but once you’ve lived with it a few days, you realize just how nice it is to move seamlessly between apps.

Slide Over, Split View, and Picture in Picture

These three multitasking features are primarily focused on improving iPad multitasking. Since iPad has a bit more real estate to play with than an iPhone, they’re able to take their multitasking improvements a step further.

Slide Over allows you to open a second app in a small panel without leaving the app you’re in. So if you’re reading the paper and want to check out something on Twitter, you can do the latter and only lose a small portion of the news paper screen.

Split View takes this idea a step further. Think about how often you’re comparing, say, a Google Spreadsheet with a file from Dropbox. Now with Split View you can divide your screen equally between the apps, again saving you the hassle of switching back and forth between two apps and dealing with the annoyance of only being able to actually see one at a time.

Picture in Picture

Ever need to access a document while you’re taking a Skype call or watching a video? This new feature resizes your videos—whether it’s a video chat or an episode of Empire—and puts them in the lower corner, allowing you to focus on another app without missing anything that’s happening on your video screen.

Of course, these are only the most multitasking-focused updates in the latest iOS. Other updates are sure to offer plenty for everyone—including freelancers—to love.
