Andre, Phalbo on Fiverr®, lives in Rome with his wife and daughter, and they are now expecting their second child. Andre studied cinema and cartoon animation in school and has directed several music videos for well-known artists in Italy.
He currently works part-time for a research consultancy and communications agency as an animator, video editor and graphic designer. The rest of his workday is devoted to Fiverr. Here he is to share his story.
About four years ago, a friend sent me a link to Fiverr, and just out of curiosity, I clicked on it, not knowing that I was about to change my life.
I actually started on Fiverr as a buyer, and was surprised by the quality of sellers, especially a videographer who delivered an awesome and technically outstanding video in no time.
Then I realized that although my work is quite time consuming, not everyone has my experience and equipment, so I tried to figure out what I could offer as a Gig®, something small but valuable at the same time. That’s when I came up with my first speed-drawing Gig.
I made my first sale just a few hours after setting up the service, and after some time, I created several other Gigs. Overall, my sales have grown exponentially, though the volume does go up and down. Sales have been especially strong during periods when companies need to do more promotion.
One of the tips I can give to new sellers is to realize that buyers who don’t understand how much effort is required for a production may make excessive demands. The solution to this type of problem is pretty simple. Communicate with the buyer. Yes, buyers always want your best effort at a lower price, but if you explain clearly what’s required, they will usually resize the request or increase their budget.
Another tip, which many other Top Rated Sellers have offered, is to over-deliver. I have always tried to deliver a little more than required. And it doesn’t matter if it’s a $5 order or a $500 order. Both get equal attention because the reviews have the same value.
Thanks to Fiverr, I have working relationships with hundreds of people from different cultures around the world, and these relationships have continued to influence me as a professional. On the business side, working in a creative profession is always risky, and it can be difficult to ensure a steady income. But even though sales go up and down, I know I can count on Fiverr, and there have been periods over the last four years when Fiverr was my only income for months. Without it I would have been in serious trouble!
Today, I use my Fiverr earnings for bills, food, and rent – and to buy things for my little girl, which is the best way I know to spend my money!
