7 Shortcuts Every Boss Should Do to Make Their Managers Feel Productive

As a boss, your employees’ well-being should always be at the forefront of your mind. But sometimes it can be difficult to figure out what employees need from you in order for them to feel appreciated and productive. Everybody knows that when an employee feels like the job he or she is doing is important, they take more pride in their work and get even better results.

There are a few quick and easy ways that a boss can make their managers feel like they’re on the track to success. Sure, they require a bit of time and effort, but we think of them as shortcuts because they’re likely to get you the results you want faster than you would by not doing them.

1) Remind Them of the Larger Purpose

Sometimes the things we do each day at work can feel insignificant. Maybe it’s a task that no one will see or notice. Or maybe it’s hard to see how it works with the bigger picture. As a boss, make it your job to remind your managers what your company’s ultimate goal is. That way they can see how all the tasks they do each day are building toward something bigger.

2)Compliment, Compliment, Compliment

Sometimes your managers just need a little bit of love. One of the biggest mistakes a boss can make is never complimenting their employees. So many times it can feel like you’re working in a vacuum with no concept of how great or terrible your work is. So as a boss, make it your job to tell an employee when he or she is going something you like. And while you never want to be disingenuous, complimenting employees on a regular, even daily, basis will always be good for your bottom line.

3) Listen

A good conversation can make a manager feel like their workload is that much more manageable. Be sure that you really listen whenever an employee comes to your with a question, concern, or just to shoot the breeze. As their boss, they want to feel like you know them and their work. Even if you’re busy with your own tasks, take a moment to stop and give them your full attention.

4) Say Thanks

It’s a little word, but it packs quite a punch. A simple thank you serves the same purpose as a compliment: it’s an easy way to verbalize your satisfaction and make your managers feel like they are on the right track. Give thanks freely and regularly.

5) Keep Lists

Keeping a project-based list for your department or office is a great way to show your team what’s getting done. When a big presentation or project is looming on the horizon, make a list of all the steps required to complete it. Then, cross out the steps as they are finished. It lets everyone know that you’re on the road to achieving your common goal.

6) Have Regular Meetings

One-on-one meetings can give shape to your managers’ careers in a way that helps them see the bigger picture, as well as their daily goals. Set up these meetings on a regular basis so the two of you can review what you’ve accomplished so far. Like listening, setting aside this specific slot of time for feedback and planning shows your managers that you care.

7) Have Fun

Work is important—but so is taking a break. As a manager, encourage your employees to step outside for an ice cream cone on a hot summer afternoon, even if the work is piling up. Sometimes a simple breather does wonders in terms of recharging an employee and helping them get into the groove of work.
