Freelancing is tough, since there isn’t any guarantee of where you’ll be working next year, or if you will even be working, for that matter. For some, the uncertainty is a thrill and living a freelancer’s lifestyle is very enjoyable. For others, it’s a nightmare to deal with the everyday hassles of being a freelancer in any industry.
Here are 5 nightmares that many freelancers deal with on a yearly and even daily basis.
1. Filing taxes
Just the thought of filing taxes causes cold sweats for freelancers, especially because income may be coming from different sources and keeping track is a headache. You never want the government to come knocking when you don’t file properly.
2. Finding steady work
Every freelancer goes through a process of trying to find a job that is stable and will offer them enough money to pay the bills. Finding steady work as a freelancer in nearly any industry is a nightmare especially if you haven’t found something in a while after your last job.
3. Getting clients
If you work with a number of different clients, proving to someone that you are the go-to person to get the job done can be tough, particularly during the first few months when you have little experience. Freelancing also means that you’ll be battling some pretty big companies for a job at times
4. Insurance and Paid Sick Leave
When you are not working for a large company, there is no such thing as paid sick leave. Many times, a freelancer will not have insurance, which makes it a nightmare if they fall ill or get hurt. Buying insurance may also be a nightmare for freelancers if they are unable to find steady work. You must be realistic about whether you want to take a job or not, especially if your insurance and health benefits are on the line.
5. Breaking a contract
Often times, freelancers tend to sign contracts with the company for which they are performing work. Breaching a contract by not following some of the agreed upon terms can be a nightmare if the companies for which you are working decides to take legal action. Your contract may also be terminated if you decide to work on projects for other companies.
